The "Ten Stupid Things" of the title and their associated one-sentence descriptions are both insightful and hilarious. That said, this is one of the very worst books I have ever read in my entire life.

And I have read many bad evangelism books. But those short-form "Ten Stupid Things" are awesome. Surratt strews insulting asides at all sorts of people he has met, worked for, or pastored throughout the years. He adds a great deal of filter that I think he means to be funny. Take this instance of his The "Ten Stupid Things" of the title and their associated one-sentence descriptions are both insightful and hilarious.

Take this instance of his sitting in a Starbucks to observe non-churchgoing people: "So I settle in with a fake cup of coffee I don't drink the stuff -- it stunts your growth. The above bit segues into how to make our churches as accessible as Starbucks. Starbucks as accessible is a fascinating concept to me, inasmuch as the baristas there correct the words in my order most every time I have gone.

The manners of choosing a place to sit, how to plug in a laptop, and how loud to speak to your friend also add social complexity to visiting a Starbucks. By contrast, It takes little social skill or special knowledge to show up to both small country churches and megachurches, sit in the back, and pretend to sing. This is because Starbucks markets by snob appeal. That Surratt writes a book and advocates mimicking this is absurd. Two quick examples of way to improve preaching should suffice to show the vast insipidity of "Ten Stupid Things": Showing a video of preaching from another church and driving a motorcycle "onstage".

However, if none of this will persuade you not to read this book, I leave you with this.

Surratt tells us that every change in your church begins with your vision. Not with God the Holy Ghost. Not with a wise word quietly spoken by a devout and sage member. Not with the seeming coming together of three different ideas from different parts of the life of your church. Not anything outside of you, but rather your vision is the source of, the beginning of change in your church. This is evil. Surratt's little book is imbued from beginning to end with horrible and sometimes evil advice.

I strongly recommend picking up Ten Stupid Things that Keep Churches from Growing, noting with interest the two pages marked "Content" at the beginning of the book, and putting it back down again. Sep 02, Pat rated it liked it. A simple, easy-to-read book that offers practical advice for church leaders and pastors.

Some memorable quotes: "Our church will not grow until we repent and turn to Jesus, rather than ministry for fulfillment.
